2005/9/27 FW: End of Suburbia PresDear All
Attached is a flyer for the next PedBike Trans event. Considering current oil prices and discussion within the community about this and the impact it has, the film presented offers more food for thought. Please forward this to whoever you think would be interested and encourage them to come along.
If you intend to go then ask for the member price as EaST BUG is a member of PedBike Trans.
Hope to see you there

PBT Film Festival - ?The End of Suburbia: Oil depletion and the collapse of the American Dream? Since World War II North Americans have invested much of their newfound wealth in suburbia. It has promised a sense of space, affordability, family life and upward mobility. As the population of suburban sprawl has exploded in the past 50 years, so too has the suburban way of life become embedded in the American consciousness. Suburbia, and all it promises, has become the American Dream. But as we enter the 21st century, serious questions are beginning to emerge about the sustainability of this way of life. With brutal honesty and a touch of irony, The End of Suburbia explores the American Way of Life and its prospects as the planet approaches a critical era, as global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply. World Oil Peak and the inevitable decline of fossil fuels are upon us now, some scientists and policy makers argue in this documentary. The consequences of inaction in the face of this global crisis are enormous. What does Oil Peak mean for North America? As energy prices skyrocket in the coming years, how will the populations of suburbia react to the collapse of their dream? Are today's suburbs destined to become the slums of tomorrow? And what can be done NOW, individually and collectively, to avoid The End of Suburbia? For more information, www.endofsuburbia.com/www.endofsuburbia

2005/6/2 Official Launch Is Full Steam AheadInvitation to the official launch of EAST BUG, Kangaroo Point Cliffs Bikeway, 8:30am Sunday 5 June (World Environment Day) This coming Sunday, June 5th is World Environment Day with this year’s theme being – Green Cities… Plan for the Planet. If that’s not enough it’s also the beginning of Queensland Week. To celebrate we will be officially launching EAST BUG (Easy And Sustainable Transport Bicycle User Group).
EAST BUG is a community based, not for profit group that wants to encourage more people in the Eastern Suburbs to ride bikes, and advocate for high quality cycling facilities to make it safer and more attractive to ride more often. If you live south of the Brisbane River and east of the SE Freeway out to Wynnum this means you.
If you ride a bike for fun and exercise or to commute to work or school or would like to in the future you are welcome to come along. Bring your family and friends and have a great time with us enjoying a free hot breakfast. Why not ride in and make a day of it.
Breakfast will get underway at 8:30am in the park along the bike path at the bottom of the Kangaroo Point Cliffs at the end of the service road by the BBQ’s near the tiled mosaic square. Just look for all the bikes…

2005/5/10 Official LaunchLaunch of EAST BUG The official launch for the BUG will be on Sunday June 5th which just happens to be World Environment Day. This year the theme is Green Cities – Plan for the Planet. How appropriate is that. A detailed program for the launch will be available later this week or early next week depending on how much red tape I encounter when trying to book a park etc etc. At this point and subject to confirmation the venue will be along the bikeway at the bottom of the Kangaroo Point Cliffs – stand by. Please keep this date free in you diaries… the more people we have attending the launch the bigger the impact. I am hoping to get State and Local Government Pollies and bureaucrats along that represent the Eastern Suburbs and the Press, so big numbers of people attending will really make them take notice of us and beside all that we are planning on having a great time. All going well we will be putting on a hot breakfast with espresso coffee to ease you into your Sunday and celebrate World Environment Day. What Is EAST BUGWhat is EAST BUG?
EAST BUG which not only stands for the geographical area that it represents is also an acronym for Easy And Sustainable Transport Bicycle User Group. As the name suggests the principle focus of EAST BUG will be to look at ways that cycling can become an easy and sustainable way that residents of the Eastern Suburbs can move around their patch and into other parts of Brisbane and surrounding areas whether it be to commute to and from work or go for a recreational or social ride with friends and neighbours.
We aim to achieve this by …
Maximising the use of what we already have - by encouraging the maintenance and upkeep of existing bike lanes and pathways and end trip facilities Advocating for the provision of more and better infrastructure on and off roads namely bike lanes, bike paths and end trip facilities Encouraging better integration of cycling infrastructure and access with all modes of public transport Gathering information about current usage of the Eastern Suburbs by cyclists and feeding this information into current and future planning processes Gathering feedback from the community about cycling issues and actively participating in community consultation processes within the Eastern Suburbs Increasing participation by promoting the social, economic and environmental benefits of cycling and by raising awareness of existing facilities and opportunities to potential cyclists within the Eastern Suburbs
All this and having fun while we do it!
2005/5/4 Safety ConcernsIf you have a concern about being able to cycle safely in your patch because of a lack of maintenance or poor design of infrastructure let us know by leaving a comment against this Blog and we will try and help in whatever way we can. Regards EAST BUG 2005/4/9 BCC Neighbourhood WorkshopsThese workshops are concentrating on the things the community values and holds as important about where they live and Brisbane in general. These workshops provide a good platform to launch a grass roots lead push for cycling, walking and the use of public transport in setting the scene for what Brisbane should look and feel like and provide plenty of food for thought for the planners and politicians. These workshops are the beginning of a year long process with the next steps being a series of Your Home and Neighbourhood Fairs in June and July, a CityShape Conference in August followed by detailed neighbourhood workshops from October 05 to June 06. The information gathered from this process will feed directly into the city plan for Brisbane. At a political level - this process is one of Mayor Campbell Newman's election promises and may not be enthuisiastically supported by Labor but I am told the Bureaucracy is treating it very seriously. If we look at cities around the world that are held in high regard for leading the way in providing for cycling, walking and public transport infrastructure, you are likely to find a period in their history when a line was drawn in the sand... the defining difference between them and other cities around the world is that they embraced bold and enlightened public policy and enjoyed strong government support. We need to be mustering a massive community push and harnessing this process to further the goals of cycling in Brisbane and SEQ. Get on your bike and get as many friends, neighbours and relatives that you can, to attend one of these workshops and express their support for cycling, walking and public transport issues. I went to the first workshop in the Eastern Suburbs at Greenslopes on the 7th of April and the process is pretty laid back. It consists of an open discussion and question format where you can come and go as you please. They have a series of poster boards setup, where you can write your comments up and see what other people are saying as well. You can also fill out a survey that goes into more detail while you are there or you can take it away and send it in later. Alternatively the same survey is available online at the address below if you prefer to do it over the internet. REMEMBER... INVOLVEMENT IS THE KEY. IF WE DON'T SPEAK UP AND ADVOCATE FOR WHAT WE BELIEVE IN HOW CAN WE EXPECT ANYONE TO HEAR US. The details of these workshops and the process overall are available on the following link: |
